As a practice, each of our practitioners sets their own fees in accordance with the type of work, the frequency of sessions and other factors such as the client’s income.
As a guide, the fee for an individual therapy hour (50 minutes) with one of our psychotherapists starts from £75 per session.
All of our clinicians are highly qualified and are experts in their field. Fees will also differ depending on whether the work is with individuals, couples or is family therapy. The fee you will pay will be agreed between you and your clinician following an initial assessment.
Fees covered by private health insurance are charged at a separate rate – please enquire. All fees are payable directly to our practitioners.
Generally, open-ended therapy and clients who attend therapy multiple times a week are seen at a lower rate compared to those who attend weekly, or who have agreed on short-term therapy. In the case of ongoing therapy, fees are usually reviewed annually.
Group session fees:
The group is charged on a sliding scale between £33 and £40 a session. The therapist and you would discuss how much you could afford before joining the group.
You would also need some – usually around three – individual sessions to help you prepare for joining the group. These sessions are charged at the same rate as our individual therapy fees (see above).
For further information on groups, please contact us or see our group psychotherapy page.
What do our session fees include?
Your session fee secures a dedicated time in your therapist’s schedule. This fee is set by your therapist to cover their time spent with you, and the use of their training and expertise. During this time, you can safely and confidentially explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences with a trained professional in order to understand your issues and work towards personal growth, however that looks to you.
Accepted payment methods
At Brighton and Hove Psychotherapy, fees are generally paid upon receipt of invoice directly by bank transfer to your psychotherapist.
Payment information such as account information and due dates will be provided by your therapist when you begin working together.
Recurring therapy fees
How and when you pay for your therapist is something that will be agreed upon during your initial consultations. The most common way of paying for ongoing sessions is being billed in arrears by invoice at the end of the month. In some circumstances, therapy is covered by medical insurance providers, in which case your therapist will invoice them directly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the initial consultation free?
Initial consultations are generally charged for as your therapist is committing their time to the meeting. During the initial phone consultation, both you and your therapist will assess if you can work well together and if psychotherapy is the best route for you.
What is the cancellation and refund policy?
Each of our team have their own cancellation policies in place based on the structure of their practice and the type of therapy they offer.
Generally, cancellation periods are a week or more, but in some cases such as psychoanalytic psychotherapy, patients pay their clinicians whether they attend or not. This is due to the rigid boundary that psychoanalytic psychotherapy holds as sessions are always weekly at a minimum, with holiday dates for the year agreed in advance.
Do you offer payment plans?
No, we don’t offer payment plans. Fees are paid on a regular basis set by your therapist.
What happens if I need to pause my sessions?
In individual psychotherapy, you are able to take scheduled breaks or breaks for holidays. However, while it isn’t uncommon to return to therapy after you have stopped, pauses are not generally recommended as pauses can interfere with the therapeutic process and treatment.
In couples therapy, family therapy, and child psychotherapy, it occasionally may be appropriate to pause the sessions in order to implement what you have been working on. You can agree on this with your therapist and set a return date to continue your sessions.
When do I need to pay for my sessions?
Sessions are generally billed weekly or monthly in arrears. However, this will be agreed with your clinician.
Do you offer discounts for block bookings?
We don’t offer discounts for block bookings, each of our therapists has set fees for their sessions that will be billed regularly.
What if I can’t make my appointment?
If you are unable to make your appointment, we will always try and accommodate you on a different date and time that week. However, this may not always be the case and will also depend on the contract you have with your therapist.
Do you charge extra for evening or weekend appointments?
No, our fees are not dependent on the time of day or the day of the week.
Are there any additional costs I should be aware of?
No, the fee you agree with your therapist is the fee that you will pay until a fee review occurs (this is generally annually for ongoing therapy).
