I am a UKCP registered Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist qualified to work with a broad range of psychological issues as well as more complex mental health conditions in adults. I provide both long-term psychoanalytic psychotherapy and short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy to individuals and couples in Brighton & Hove and Lewes.
After completing 7 years of training I worked as a clinician within the NHS providing psychotherapy to in-patients on psychiatric wards and latterly as part of a multi-disciplinary team within a community mental health service.
It is my experience that in order for psychotherapy to be effective, clients need to feel confident that their therapist is impartial, empathic and non-judgemental. In addition to this therapists need professional knowledge and skill, and an ability to become empathically attuned to and immersed in their client’s private, subjective world.
My training and experience means that I am able to provide this environment to my clients so that they are able to explore their feelings, thoughts, emotions and behaviours within a safe, confidential and supportive therapeutic relationship.
Psychoanalytic thinking is based around the idea that within our unconscious mind are memories of events and relationships which influence us in many ways but remain outside our awareness. What we can become aware of are distressing symptoms that can seem senseless and come on “out of the blue”, for example panic, anxiety or depression. Alternatively we might behave in ways we know are self-destructive but which we feel powerless to control. However confusing these symptoms or behaviours may seem, it is possible through psychotherapy to uncover the psychological cause.
With greater awareness and understanding of the cause of our symptoms a skilled psychotherapist can then help us to find appropriate ways of managing our issues. In this way symptoms are relieved behaviour is changed and suffering is reduced.
I have specialist experience working with adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse within the NHS and in private practice. I am also qualified to work with clients who have been diagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder.
Other areas of interest include:
- anxiety and panic attacks
- loss including loss of youth, status, identity
- problems adapting to life changes
- relationship difficulties
- affairs and betrayals
- anger issues
- low self esteem
- work related stress
- chronic fatigue and ME
- feelings of emptiness and hopelessness
My own therapy
As a UKCP registered psychoanalytic psychotherapist I have undertaken my own personal therapy. I understand the powerful feelings that therapy can stir up. I respect the power of the process and the efficacy of treatment. In other words I know from personal experience that psychotherapy works.
